Lenovo Launches New Smartphones In India


MUMBAI: PC maker, Lenovo today announced its foray into the smartphone market in India. This move stems from Lenovo's 4 screen strategy in the PC + era, of which smartphones is a key component.

The four screens comprise of PCs, tablets, smartphones and smart TVs. Lenovo is entering the Indian market for smartphones after having built a strong and successful mobile phone business as the number two player with 11.2% (Q2 CY2012) market share in China. The smartphones are all based on the Android platform and will be priced in the range of Rs 6,499 to Rs 28,499.

Talking at the event, Amar Babu, MD, Lenovo India said the smartphones are currently being rolled out in South India and Gujarat markets and in the next six months the phones will be available in the rest of the country. Lenovo is hoping to replicate the success it had in the China market, and India is only the second country after China where Lenovo phones are being launched.

"Lenovo has built a solid and successful mobile phone business in China reaching the number two position in the smartphone category in less than 18 months," said JD HowardBSE -3.79 %, Vice President, Lenovo MIDH. The smartphones - K860, S880, S560, P700i and A60+ will be available across Lenovo's exclusive stores in the country. Shailendra Katyal, marketing head, Lenovo India said the products have been received very positively by its trade partners.

In the initial phase, the products will be pushed through point of sale activities and digital initiatives. Mass media support for the phones will come in the second phase of the launch said the Lenovo officials.
